The Lost Tapes 2 is a compilation album by rapper Nas. The newest season of reality TV show The Kardashians began airing on April 14. I do think a song here or there could have been cut to make this album more manageable and Nas could have taken a bigger risk and try to push a new sound out but Lost Tapes 2 isn’t a bad listen and I’m sure the Nas stans out there will see this album as a return to form for Nas.Double vinyl LP pressing. It’s a lot more low-key and straightforward with slow jazzier tones which isn’t a bad thing on the face of it, but Nas plays it safe for too long on this album which makes it a bit one dimensional getting through it. The production on here seems to be a lot more suited to Nas’ style than the samples Kanye handed him on NASIR. His large-scale works sometimes reach bombastic levels of jazz-rock grandeur, but their vibrance. A Rock Odyssey opens the program with Ellis and orchestra exploring one of his trademark moody, dissonant pieces. The Lost Tapes 2 ultimately succeeds in offering fans a glimpse into more material from the prodigious spitter but makes one wonder why some of these tracks weren’t included on the original. An unattended Merit cigarette was burning itself out in a butt bucket, within Sully’s reach. 2 adds to his canon, including live recordings that feature the equally brilliant pianist, Milcho Leviev.
On the other end of the taunt conversation was Laird Ross. At his worst, he sounds regressive and a little loopy Tanasia is an especially low point. However the album does end on a high point with a almost 7 minute track of Nas rapping positively about life around him. I need more time Ross, pleaded Sully Grunwald, smart phone in one hand, 32oz Burger King cup half filled with Old Taylor and slowly melting ice in the other. At best, Nas sounds nostalgic for better days (at least for himself).
